Stalin takes stock of flood damage in delta

Rs. 72.62 lakh allotted for providing relief in Thanjavur district

THANJAVUR: Samba paddy crop on 1,36,468 hectares had been damaged in the recent rain in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, said M.K. Stalin, Local Administration Minister, here on Monday.

He inspected rain affected areas in Thanjavur district after seeing the damage in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts.

He told presspersons that in Thanjavur alone paddy crop on 24,879 hectares were damaged. In Tiruvarur district, it was 73,148 hectares and in Nagapattinam district 38,441 hectares.

He said that Rs. 72.62 lakh had been allotted for providing relief to affected people in Thanjavur district. This is an initial amount and after getting assessment of damage from the District Collector due compensation would be paid to farmers and others. Till Monday, Rs. 45 lakh had been disbursed as relief.

Groundnut was damaged on 1,172 hectares and black gram on 172 hectares in Thanjavur district As many as 3,631 houses were damaged. Out of them, 336 were fully damaged and 3,295 partly damaged. Four persons died in rain-related incidents in Thanjavur district. Among them Rs. one lakh compensation had been given to three. There is some dispute over heir in another case and it would be settled.

Mr. Stalin saw a damaged bridge at Kalanchery. He distributed relief materials to affected people at Mariammankoil.

Ko.Si.Mani, Minister for Cooperation, S.N.M.Ubayathullah, Minister for Commercial Taxes, S.S.Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, and C.Vijayaraj Kumar, Thanjavur Collector, accompanied him.
