Demand for wage revision and arrears

TIRUCHI: One of the three ‘Indian’ flights operating via Tiruchi was cancelled owing to a flash strike by ground handling staff of the airlines demanding wage revision and payment of arrears among others.

The Chennai-Tiruchi-Thiruvananthapuram-Sharjah flight was cancelled on Wednesday. Consequently the flight on the return direction, scheduled for Thursday, has also been cancelled, according to the Area Marketing Manager, Indian, Tiruchi, T.H. Radhakrishnan.

Passengers bound for Sharjah from Tiruchi were accommodated in the Air India Express’ Dubai flight later in the afternoon.

Two other flights from Tiruchi were operated after a delay. The early morning Sharjah-Thiruvanathapuram-Tiruchi-Chennai flight left here after a brief delay.

The Kuwait-Fujairah-Calicut-Tiruchi-Chennai flight departed about 25 minutes behind schedule. Both the flights arrived here behind schedule. Twenty members of the Air Corporation Employees’ Union in Tiruchi participated in the strike, according to the union representative, Khaja Mohideen.

They also staged a demonstration in front of the airport to press for their demands. The booking office of the airlines here remained closed.

The Indian has announced the cancellation of the following flights too: Chennai-Tiruchi-Chennai flight on Thursday, Chennai-Tiruchi-Tiruvananthapuram-Sharjah flight on Thursday and Sharjah-Tiruvananthapuram-Tiruchi –Chennai flight on Friday.
