Eco-system and national integration the theme for Vidya Sagar’s annual drama

CHENNAI: Students of Vidya Sagar, a school for special children, presented a futuristic skit to express their concern for the environment at their annual drama presentation on Tuesday.

The skit had an interesting scene; a politician, breathing from an oxygen cylinder, inaugurates a school lab for research on how plants grew.

The children, who showed the contrast between the present and the future, emphasised the need for protecting the environment and making the planet greener. They also presented a skit on national integration, which depicted people coming together irrespective of caste, creed and colour.

Vidya Sagar’s director Rajul Padmanabhan said that the two themes were evolved by the children, who worked on the scripts, made the props, designed the costumes and scored the music. The group of around 200 children had worked for about 40 hours in a workshop with a theatre expert.

Suresh Dharma of Black Theatre, who worked with the children in putting together the plays, said though it was a big challenge to understand them, it was worth the effort. He also said that an inclusive theatre workshop would be conducted for these children with special needs and those in other schools.
