SALEM: Security in Salem and Namakkal districts has been stepped up in view of Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday.

An elaborate bandobust scheme has been drawn up for the celebrations in the two districts. Round-the-clock vigil has been provided to Salem Airport, railway stations, bus stands, places of worship and cinema halls.

Passengers were being frisked at the entrance of the railway stations and bus stands, before being allowed to proceed. The Railway police have strengthened the surveillance in all the railway stations and were scanning the baggage and parcels, in order to ensure that nothing was amiss. All the vital installations including Stanley Reservoir, Thermal power station and various government establishments had been brought under security.

The Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Salem and the Government Boys Higher Secondary School (Namakkal South), where Republic Day functions in the two districts would be held, had been closed for strangers.

Surveillance cameras were installed at important road junctions and temporary check posts had been set up at all major thoroughfares.

Vehicular checks were being conducted at all check posts, to make sure security was not compromised.

Tight security was put in place in bazaars and crowded places in Salem city and other towns in the two districts.

Teams were formed to monitor the boarding and lodging houses. Police conducted combing operations in many places on Sunday and Monday.
