Sarvodaya leader to get Opus Prize

Thanjavur: Krishnammal Jaganathan, Sarvodaya leader and Secretary of Land for Tillers Freedom (LAFTI), working for the emancipation of Dalits in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, has been selected for the Opus Prize 2008 given by the Seattle University of USA.

In a communication sent to Krishnammal, the University President Stephen Sundborg said that Krishnammal Jaganathan will be given the prize at a function to be held at Benaroya hall at the university campus on November 18, 2008.

“This is a great opportunity for Seattle University, the Opus prize foundation and the greater Seattle Community to honour faith-based humanitarians world around and highlight our mission at the University of educating leaders for a just and humane world. We are proud to showcase great humanitarians and to provide our students and the city of Seattle, an incredible educational opportunity to meet these inspiring individuals. They are unsung heroes who address problems with a commitment to service and social entrepreneurship,” Mr. Sundborg said.

Started in 1981, Land For Tillers Freedom is working towards justice and land rights in Tamil Nadu by elevating the social status and acceptance of Dalits through housing and farm land provisions.
