Safety of newly-laid BG line inspected

CHENNAI: Commissioner of Railway Safety T. J. S. Naidu on Wednesday conducted safety inspection of the newly laid third broad gauge line between Korukkupet and Ennore on the Chennai Beach-Gudur BG section.

The 12-km line is part of the Rs.99-crore Korukkupet-Athipet third line project (18 km), sanctioned by the Railway Ministry sometime ago..

Accompanied by Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) R. Ramanthan, Mr. Naidu checked various safety parameters, including electrification and points at railway crossings.

Later, he conducted high-speed trials using a special train formation on the new line.

An official e said the work on the remaining six km from Ennore to Athipet would be completed by next year, including construction of a line across the Ennore Creek.

The Ministry also sanctioned construction of a third line between Chennai Beach and Korukkupet. Once this is completed, there will be three BG lines from Beach to Athipet.

To have dedicated suburban lines for up and down trains from Beach to Athipet, the Ministry had sanctioned the fourth line, work for which would commence soon, the official added.
