200 police personnel to be posted at Velankanni for Christmas

NAGAPATTINAM: With Christmas and New Year festive seasons round the corner, Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis said that the police had taken all measures to ensure the safety and security of people at temples, churches and other public places.

“People need not panic at all as there is no threat of terror. We are concerned about the possibility of a stampede as huge crowds are expected at Velankanni Church, Nagore and temples in the region during this period,” Mr. Kotnis said at a press briefing here on Tuesday.

The police had formed quick reaction teams (QRT) of 10 policepersons each with modern communication systems and self-loading rifles (SLRs) and other weapons to handle any emergency. Such teams would be stationed at Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi, Mr. Kotnis said.

Picketing at all temples would start before Christmas and statues in the district would be protected from vandals.

All the 1,200 police personnel in the district would be mobilised with 200 personnel posted at Velankanni during Christmas.

As the anniversary of the Keezhavenmani incident happened to fall on the same day, another 150 personnel would be posted in that area.

All the important temples in places including Sikkal, Ettukudi, Sirkazhi, Tiruvengadu, Tirukkadaiyur, Vaitheeswaran Koil and Mayiladuthurai would be provided security for the New Year. Random monitoring of temples at night would also be taken up.

Vehicle checking would be intensified from December 30, and bomb detection squads would be posted in both divisional headquarters at Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.

Traffic regulations would be strictly enforced in this period and the Market Street and Velipalayam areas would be provided with traffic monitoring in two shifts.
