TIRUCHI: System of rice intensification (SRI) has become a watchword among the farmers in the current day agricultural scenario witnessing scarcity of water and agricultural labour.

The Tiruchi District Cooperative Union too has come forward to contribute its mite for popularising SRI among the farmers.

A special demonstration of the preparation and planting of saplings was held at Esanaikorai village near Lalgudi recently. Joint Director of Agriculture N. Ponnusamy said the SRI ensured optimum utilisation of irrigation water and eliminated wastage.

Cultivation cost could be reduced to a great extent thanks to proper use of seeds. The SRI also resulted in higher productivity and attractive returns for the farmer.

Special Officer of Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank R. Brinda said that competitions were held to encourage farmers registering higher yield in paddy.
