Plan to raise crops on 1,44,817 ha: Tiruvarur Collector

TIRUVARUR: With the Mettur dam fast filling up, farmers of Tiruvarur district have been asked to prepare for samba and thaladi cultivation by the district administration.

According to M. Chandrasekaran, Collector, it has been planned to raise samba and thaladi crops on 1,44,817 hectares.

Out of this, samba crop is to be raised on 1,34,807 hectares and thaladi on 10,010 hectares.

The Collector told presspersons here on Monday that adequate amount of samba seeds were available with the agriculture department and with private companies.

There is a total stock of 7,241 tonnes of samba seeds in the district.

Fertilizer stock

Fertilizers have also been stocked adequately. The requirement for the entire season is 18,900 tonnes of Di Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), 40,000 tonnes of urea, 14,500 tonnes of Potash.

Out of this, there is a stock of 5,096 tonnes of DAP, 1,618 tonnes of urea and 919 tonnes of potash.

“This is adequate for the immediate requirement. Further loads of fertilizers will be brought to the district depending upon the need,” Mr. Chandrasekaran said.

Loan disbursal

Co-operative and nationalised banks have been asked to disburse loans to farmers for taking up samba cultivation. Co-operative banks have set a target of Rs. 60 crore for disbursal as loan in the district this year.

Out of this, Rs. 10 crore has already been disbursed. The crop loan target set by the nationalised banks is Rs. 447.5 crore.

Kuruvai could not be taken up in canal-irrigated areas in the district as water had not been released from Mettur Dam on June 12, the traditional date for release of water this year. It was raised only in pumpset-irrigated areas in the district.

Kuruvai transplantation has been completed only on 9,100 hectares in pumpset irrigated areas in the district. Out of this, farmers have raised Kuruvai under System of Rice Intensification method on 5,000 hectares.
