Rs.1.5-crore worth of heroin seized at the airport

TAMBARAM: Customs officials on Friday seized heroin worth about Rs.1.5 crore from a passenger bound for Sri Lanka at the international terminal of the Chennai Airport.

A release from Parminder Singh, Commissioner of Customs (Chennai Airport), said personnel of the Air Customs Intelligence unit intercepted a Sri Lankan national on suspicion. His baggage containing a suitcase and a carton with a musical keyboard inside it was scanned and preliminary checks revealed nothing. On close scrutiny, officials noticed that the keyboard had been tampered with, and it was opened. Seven plastic bags containing heroin were concealed under the keyboard. The seized heroin weighed 1.57 kilograms and was worth Rs.1.5 crore in the international market, the release said. In the current financial year, so far, Customs personnel at the airport had seized heroin worth more than Rs.11 crore in the international market and other goods worth Rs.14 crore, the release said.
