Rs.1 lakh each for kin of those killed in Sivakasi blast

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday announced Rs.1 lakh each to the families of the workers who were killed in a fire accident at a cracker unit in Sivakasi on Sunday.

Replying to a calling attention motion, the Chief Minister said the severely injured would get Rs.50,000 and those who had sustained 30 per cent burns Rs.25,000, based on the report of the Collector.

Eleven people were killed while 12 others are battling for their life in the accident at Sri Krishna Fire Works at Namaskarithanpatti in Sivakasi taluk.Those with 30 per cent burns are being treated at the Government Hospital in Sivakasi.

Probe ordered

The Chief Minister said besides temporarily cancelling the licence of the factory, the government had ordered inquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer and the Additional District Judge.

He said Backward Classes Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu visited the spot and assessed the situation.
