Road project works hinge on consultant’s report

TIRUCHI: The works to be taken under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP) in the Tiruchi Corporation limits would be finalised based on a detailed project report to be prepared by a consultant.

The project seeks to improve the urban road infrastructure. It will be implemented, in the first phase, in Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Madurai and Chennai Corporations and Alandur, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Valasaravakkam Municipalities.

The Tiruchi Corporation has been hoping to get substantial allocation under the project and had prepared proposals worth over Rs.100 crore. Under the projects, roads would be improved with pavements, storm water drain and ducts for laying of utilities. The State government had recently decided to appoint a design, supervision and management consultant for preparing a detailed project report (DPR), sources said.

The Corporation was hoping to give a facelift to the city roads utilising the funds allotted under the scheme. Already, a few road development works have been taken up with financial assistance from the German development bank, KFW. The Thillai Nagar Main Road and some of the cross cut roads along it were recently widened. The Corporation has proposed to erect a road median along the Thillai Nagar Road.

Corporation sources said that a similar facelift could be given to several other arterial roads in the city and some of the roads in the suburbs once funds were sanctioned under TURIP.
