Contractors reluctant to undertake maintenance of roads

ERODE: Though the highways department has concentrated on laying main roads, roads within the Erode municipal limits need immediate attention of the municipality as they are in a very bad condition.

Roads in all 45 municipal wards have to be developed, said the Municipal Chairman, M. Subramanian, two months ago and resolutions were also passed in the Municipal council, sanctioning funds for road development.

But municipal contractors are reluctant to undertake the work stating that cost of all materials, mainly the blue metal, has increased.

Pathetic condition

Erode Municipal Council revising the estimates has entrusted the work to the contractors. But works in many important roads were not undertaken.

The ever-crowded Indiranagar road is in a pathetic condition and two wheelers have to bear the brunt.

The ward councillor, Nagarathinam, said he had apprised the municipality about the plight of the ward people and the municipality has also sanctioned the work.

Similarly, the main road leading to the Old Railway Station through the chief educational officer's office is also in disrepair. The ward councillor, Sampath, said the road belonged to the railway department and the municipal administration had written to the railways for sanction.

The municipal authorities said they had sanctioned more than Rs 3 crore for road works alone and because of the increase in cost of materials, the municipal contractors were delaying the work. They hoped the works would be started soon.
