Nagercoil: There was a long queue in all the fair price shops, not to purchase rice or kerosene or other essential commodities in Kanyakumari district.

The family cardholders were eager to purchase dal in the subsidised rate in fair price shops following the sudden rise in the price of dal in open markets.

According to sources, it was sold for Rs.32 per kg but now the price has been increased in to Rs. 95 per kg. Two weeks ago, no body was willing to purchase dal or other provisional items, owing to poor quality. But for the last three days, there was a heavy demand for dal as it was being sold for Rs.95 per kg in open market. But the officials in the district said that there was adequate stock of dal in all the fair price shops in the district. Hence, the people can purchase dal till the end of this month, as there was a stock of 76 tonnes of dal. So far 61 tonnes of dal was distributed through the fair price shops in the district. It was expected that 100 tonnes of dal would be needed in order to be distributed to the consumers till the end of this month.

Hence, the officials had already taken steps to distribute quality dal to the consumers as per the norms.

In the meantime Tamil Nadu Civil Supply Corporation has decided to purchase and distribute 6,000 tonnes of dal throughout the State.
