The initiative is claimed to be first of its kind in the State

MADURAI: Regional Transport Office (Madurai-South) launched a free refresher course on Monday for drivers who were involved in fatal accidents. The initiative is claimed to be first of its kind in the State.

Regional Transport Officer (in-charge) K. Selvakumar said that the State Transport Corporations had their own training centres across the State to impart refresher training for drivers involved in fatal accidents. “But there is no such provision for other persons driving private lorries, vans and buses. They lack the opportunity to undergo the refresher course which will go a long way in ensuring accident-free driving,” he said.

The RTO has designed a new syllabus for these drivers wherein case studies of accidents would be taken up and discussed with the drivers and tips on how to avoid those accidents would be given. Besides they would be given training in the basics such as road signs and motor vehicle rules.Drivers should produce a proof for the suspension of their license following fatal accidents to join the one-week training programme. “Not only those from the city and Madurai district, but also from neighbouring districts can participate in the programme,” he said.

The motive is to correct the minor mistakes the drivers make which eventually lead to death on road. On the first day, Motor Vehicle Inspector M. Maripandi took class for seven such drivers.
