Record for Lok Adalat, says judge

THANJAVUR: A record number of 880 cases have been settled in Lok Adalats held in Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Pattukottai, Papanasam and Orathanadu from October 13 to December 22, according to M. Mohammed Zafarullah Khan, Principal District Judge here. Speaking at a function organised in the court complex to distribute cheques to people whose cases were settled in Lok Adalats, Mr. Khan said that 364 were motor accident cases, 26 were matrimonial disputes, 30 cases related to Criminal Procedure Code, 357 related to Negotiable Instruments cases (cheque bouncing, etc.,) and 103 were civil cases.

Mr. Khan said that settling 880 cases in three months was a record of sorts.

Out of the cases, 135 were settled in Thanjavur, 356 in Pattukottai, 383 in Kumbakonam, four in Orathanadu and two in Papanasam.

Principal District Judge K. Sivakumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kumbakonam, N. Satheesh Kumar, Additional District Judge, (PCR), and K. Ilangovan, Additional District Judge (EC), distributed cheques. The judges distributed cheques of Rs. 2.64 crore. A sum of Rs. 1.78 crore was awarded to accident victims.
