Reconstruction of six bridges on the stretch taken up

SALEM: State Highways department has started re-laying and widening a 5.4-km-stretch on Kannankurichi Main Road here on Friday.

The stretch from Chinna Tirupathi to Kannankurichi remained badly damaged for long. People in a number of residential colonies coming under the Salem Corporation limits and Kannankurichi town panchayat take the stretch to access the city.

Heavy traffic

Huge craters and potholes on the stretch due to heavy traffic and poor maintenance have made travelling miserable for the road users.

Following repeated representations from the people, the State Highways allotted a sum of Rs. 1.88 crore for re-laying and widening the stretch. The department had also taken up the reconstruction of six bridges on the stretch as part of the work.

Traffic on Kannankurichi road was diverted through ITI road.

Officials said the works were expected to be completed before March 2009.
