Raw material bank to come up in Thanjavur

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (TNHDC) will be setting up a raw material bank in Thanjavur district in the next few weeks to help rural artisans get the raw materials at a reasonable rate and on time.

As per the plan, the TNHDC will set up the Rs. 2-crore bank that will store gunmetal, zinc, copper and brass in sufficient quantity for supply to the artisans. The Corporation has already received the initial funding to set up the bank in Swamimalai for bronze metal and in Nachiyar Koil for brass items.

“So far, these artisans were buying the raw material from the open market at a higher rate and or from their sources through a linked deal. In the bargain, they ended up getting 15-20 per cent less value for their produce. The idea here is to eliminate the middlemen,” an official told The Hindu.
