MADURAI: The Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, who arrived here from Hyderabad in a special aircraft on Monday night, have been stationed at Thirumangalam near here on Tuesday.

According to senior police officers, following the developments in Sri Lanka over the reported killing of LTTE top brass by the Sri Lankan armed forces, the government had ordered the high-profile police force to position themselves in this part of the State as a precautionary measure. About 250 personnel, including the RAF personnel, arrived from different parts of the country.

Since Monday noon, the police vigil was stepped up and there were no untoward incidents. As a safety measure, police advised the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses to withdraw its night services.

Though the city and suburbs remained peaceful in the day, but for a demonstration staged by a group of students and advocates, there were no major incidents.

The RAF personnel are not only trained to handle any but are also capable of reaching the trouble spot quickly, a senior police officer said.
