Protest against road widening again

Residents from across the city gathered at Banappa Park here on Tuesday to protest against the “contradictory statements” on road widening being made by Mayor S.K. Nataraj and the Ministers in-charge of the city.

Coming together under the banner of Save Bangalore Committee, they took out a protest march from Mysore Bank Circle to the park, urging the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the State Government to scrap the controversial road widening plan.

The protesters opposed the proposal, insisting that widening roads would not solve the city's traffic congestion.

Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali received a memorandum from the protestors and told them he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister.

B.R. Manjunath, Convener, Save Bangalore Committee, said: “All developed countries have stopped road widening, as it is not a solution to the traffic problem. The State Government must drop this plan.” M.F. Saldahna, retired judge of Karnataka High Court, said: “The livelihood of thousands is at stake.”
