Priming them to spread value

CHENNAI: About 400 teachers of various CSI Madras Diocese Matriculation schools attended a session on Saturday to get ready to offer their best to students in the new academic year.

The motivational workshop, held at the CSI Bain Higher Secondary School, featured sessions on how teachers could instil values in students and help them do better in school, and in life.

Resource persons Malini Seshadri, Usha Jesudasan, Fathima Muzaffer and Maya Gaitonde encouraged the teachers to promote values such as caring for others, honesty, forgiveness and peace among students. The resource persons are all authors of ‘Living in Harmony,’ a value education workbook brought out for students by Oxford University Press.

Ms. Jesudasan urged teachers to encourage children, especially those from difficult homes, to get rid of their anger by talking about it instead of expressing themselves through violence. “Reacting in a non-violent manner is really the best way to react to violence.” Ms. Muzaffer made out a case for strengthening value education classes.

“Very often, the value education class is stolen for some other subject… Let us give a separate report card for value education with a first rank for honesty, caring and generosity,” she said.
