Postmaster held on charge of harassing dalits

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Rural Police have arrested Sumathi (33), an extra-departmental post master at Thirumalayampalayam near Madukkarai under the provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Act of 1989.

Owing to the large volume of postal traffic, Thirumalayampalayam has an extra departmental post office.

There were complaints from villagers about the post master, Sumathi, using abusive language and preventing entry of dalits into her house, where the post office was located.


Protesting against it, the general secretary of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, K. Ramakrishnan, called for an agitation to enter the post office on July 25.

The Adi-Tamilar Peravai and Dalit Panthers of India also announced that they will stage agitations. The postal authorities conducted an enquiry along with the police.

Based on a complaint from Balamurali, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Perur Sub-division, P. Muthuraj, ordered registration of a case against Sumathi under sections 3 (1) (10) and (14) of the Act.On a complaint from the post master, the police have registered a case against Manikandan and six others.
