PUDUKOTTAI: The second phase of the pulse polio campaign went off smoothly in Pudukottai, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts on Sunday.

Unlike the first phase of the campaign in December last year which saw a panic among the parents following the spread of some rumours, the second phase went on without any hitch all through the day.

In Pudukottai district, a total of 1.60 lakh children were covered under the campaign through 1,272 centres.

Special centres were set up the Sri Virudhapureeswarar temple in Annavasal where a large number of devotees had gathered on the occasion of ‘mahakumbabhishekam’ and beside scores of marriage halls where marriages were solemnised.

Special centres were set up at the Railway stations and bus stands in the district.

According to official sources, the drops were administered to about 60 children of Narikuravars at Cauvery Nagar near here.

Perambalur

A total of 49,000 children were covered under the second phase of the campaign at 341 centres in the district.

Collector Anil Meshram inaugurated the campaign at the TELC High School here.

In a release, the Collector said that a door-to-door survey would be conducted for two days till February 3, when children not covered during Sunday’s campaign, would be administered the drops.

Ariyalur

In Ariyalur district, as many as 72,000 children were administered the oral drops through 508 centres. Collector R. Sudalaikannan said that awareness processions were taken out earlier to sensitise the masses to the importance of the campaign. Drops would be administered to left-out children through a door-to-door verification on February 2 and 3, he added.
