MADURAI: The District Collector, S. S. Jawahar, has assured the people of Uthapuram that a police outpost will function at the village.

The Collector, accompanied by the Superintendent of Police, T. S. Anbu, visited Uthapuram on Thursday to persuade a section of people, who are camping in the forest at nearby Thalayuthu following the removal of a portion of a wall that separated Dalits and caste Hindus, to return to their homes. They presented a petition to the Collector seeking protection and highlighting other demands.

Panel formed to study demands

Mr. Jawahar, who also held talks with leaders of the community at the Revenue Divisional Office at Usilampatti, informed them that a committee had already been formed to meet people belonging to both sections and get to know their demands. Follow-up action would be initiated by the district administration on the basis of the recommendations of this committee.

According to an official press release, those who met the Collector gave an assurance that people who had left the village would return to their homes soon.
