To disburse AIADMK cadres

PERAMBALUR: The police burst tear gas shells to disburse cadres of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam who resorted to a ‘road roko’ at the Four Road Junction on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway on Saturday, protesting the removal of a couple of digital banners put up by the party.

The banners had been set up at Palakkarai and the Four Road Junction, expressing the party cadres’ gratitude to the AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for having nominated the Rajya Sabha MP, A. Ilavarasan, as the party’s Parliamentary whip. The AIADMK cadres, led by Mr. Ilavarasan, gathered at the Four Road Junction on Saturday morning, condemning the removal of the banners by the Perambalur municipality.

The Collector, Anil Meshram, who rushed to the spot, tried to pacify them but in vain.

The cadres squatted on the road, blocking traffic for sometime. Tension gripped the area, when a group of volunteers of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam started gathering at the spot.

As the situation grew tense, the police burst tear gas shells to disperse the cadres and restored normalcy on the National Highway. A total of 160 AIADMK cadres, including the MLAs, Chandrahasu and Rajendran, were taken into custody and kept at the Armed Reserve Grounds.
