CHENNAI: The recent introduction of regular physiotherapy sessions for students of the Corporation Special School for Muscular Dystrophy has infused more enthusiasm among the students and their parents.

Physiotherapy sessions are crucial for a child with muscular dystrophy, said a teacher of the school.

“The introduction of physiotherapy sessions with the help of qualified post graduate physiotherapy students from colleges in Chennai is helping us a lot,” said S.Anand, a parent.

The enthusiasm among students has increased after the physiotherapy sessions, said one of the teachers.

Shakthi Vel, a student of Class VIII, said he felt more comfortable after physiotherapy sessions at school.

M.Hari Prabu, another student said the physiotherapy sessions consumed more time. The syllabus for such students is the same as that of other school students even though the physiotherapy sessions consume a chunk of their time at school. “The students are assessed individually and the treatment has to be planned accordingly,” said J.Suresh, one of the physiotherapists.

A school bus specially designed for the students is expected to be launched shortly. This is expected to increase the number of students to the special school and the demand for permanent physiotherapists may increase.
