946 directors elected unopposed in Tuticorin

Elections to the remaining primary places on July 18

Tuticorin: The first phase of the elections to designate 4,944 directors to the boards of 624 primary-level cooperative societies in the district was held on Saturday.

Official sources said that 164 primary cooperative societies went to polls to select a total of 1,235 directors.

Of them, 946 directors belonging to 121 co-operative societies were declared elected unopposed.

The ballots were thus held to select a total of 289 directors for 40 societies.

In the remaining three cooperative societies, elections were not held since no nominations were filed.

The Collector, R. Palaniyandi, conducted random checks at few polling stations in the morning to review the poll arrangements.

Sources said that during the next phase, 163 primary co-operative societies would go to polls on July 11.

It was followed by election of directors to 162 societies on July 15. The elections to the remaining primary co-operative societies would be held on July 18. Of the 624 primary cooperative societies, 247 were functioning under the direct control of Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies.

The rest were functioning under sectors like housing, khadi, fisheries, animal husbandry and handlooms.

Sources said that that polling to elect 25 directors to four taluk level cooperative societies in the district would be held on August 29.


Barring a few incidents at Vaniyakudi near Colachel and Mukilanvilai in Kanyakumari district, the first phase of cooperative elections passed off peacefully. Eleven persons were arrested for creating trouble at Vaniyakudi on Saturday.

Of the 20 fishermen co-operative societies, office-bearers of eight societies were selected unopposed.

The elections to a society at Rajakkamangalamthurai were postponed following sea erosion.

Similarly, elections were held at 26 primary agriculture co-operative banks in the first phase and of them, 28 board members were elected unopposed.

The elections for 154 members were held in different parts of the district on Saturday.
