Tirupur: People from Chettipalayam village crowded the Collectorate premises in large numbers on Monday to petition the Collector, C. Samayamoorthy, seeking protection from increasing crimes in the area. Chettipalayam panchayat president K. Marappan pointed out to Mr. Samayamoorthy that many chain snatching incidents and day-time burglaries had taken place in the village during the last few months.

The villagers pointed out that some ex-convicts had set up their base in the area and commenced their criminal activities yet again posing threat to tranquility.

“Kindly use your magisterial powers to detain the history- sheeters roaming in the village, under Goondas Act,” Mr. Marappan requested the Collector.

The petitioners also met the Superintendent of Police, A. Arun, and requested him to take steps to strengthen police patrolling in the locality and establish additional beat boxes for tackling crimes.

Another issue bothering the villagers was the poor quality of power supplied in the village.

They pointed out that pumps and electronic gadgets were getting frequently damaged owing to wide power fluctuations and low voltage.

Mr. Marappan said that a new transformer needed to be established.
