TIRUCHI: A total of 687 applicants who had applied for passports participated in the day-long Passport Adalat conducted by the Regional Passport Office here on Saturday.

The Adalat was conducted for the benefit of applicants covering 16 districts, which were under the jurisdiction of the Tiruchi office before the opening of a new passport office at Madurai on December 17 last year.

Adequate officers and staff-members were deployed to attend to the applicants so as to complete the exercise by evening.

The Regional Passport Officer, S. Balachandran monitored the whole process. Over 90 per cent of the cases were resolved at the Adalat and passports would be despatched within 10 days. The others were advised to complete the formalities.

As the Regional Passport Office here has achieved near zero pendency, it has been decided to lift the restriction of entertaining only 350 applicants a day hereafter.

From June 9 onwards, all applicants who turn up at the Tiruchi passport office before 12 noon will be allowed to submit their applications, Mr. Balachandran said in a press release.

From January to May 2008, the Tiruchi office received 56,239 applications and issued 85,390 passports including pending cases.

The office continues to issue fresh passports in 21 days time in cases where police reports have been received and issues renewal passports in five days time. All miscellaneous cases are serviced within 1 hour of submission, the release added.
