For the ‘suicide' of a Sri Lankan refugee

KARUR: The president of the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Kolathur Mani has condemned the “errant police personnel'' responsible for the suicide of the Padma Devi, a Sri Lankan refugee and inmate of the refugee camp at Rayanur here a couple of days back. Devi is the wife of Tharkolai Kumar, an accused in the Gandhigram double murder case, was taken for questioning by the police investigating her husband's alleged role in the murder of two children in May 2007. Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Mr. Mani condemned the gruesome death of the Sri Lankan refugee who self immolated herself “unable to bear the ignominy'' of “police atrocities.” So far no action has been taken against those responsible for the death of Padma Devi, Mr. Mani alleged and demanded the suspension of the police personnel for “abetting the suicide'' of Padma Devi. The police had taken away the woman without any valid papers or proper warrant. He added that a group of three police personnel had also tried to outrage her modesty leading to her taking the fatal decision and they should be brought to justice.

The manner in which the case was proceeding was not satisfactory and the case involving the death of the refugee should be handed over to the CB CID to get to the truth, Mr. Mani said. He also derided the police for refusing permission for his outfit to stage a protest demonstration in Karur on Wednesday and said that his party would conduct a public meeting on April 7 here to condemn the death of the refugee.
