Paralympic sports meet in Madurai from Saturday

MADURAI: In an effort to motivate the physically challenged, to have fun, maintain discipline and gain benefits from the social aspects of sport and expose the hidden talent in them, a south India level Paralympic sports meet is to be held in the city, said Rajkumari Jeevagan, chairman, Guru Mariappan Shenbagam Foundation.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Ms. Jeevagan said her Foundation has joined hands with Paralympic Committee of India and Paralympic Association of Tamil Nadu to conduct the sports meet at MGR Race Course Stadium here from January 31 to February 1.

She said that the effort was also to identify raw talent and train them to become world-class Paralympic athletes. “We are expecting thousand participants with 500 escorts from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu. The athletes and coaches want greater public support for the sports meet.”

The opening ceremony would be held with a ‘Traffic Safety Rally’ where Paralympic athletes who represented the country at the international level would be carrying the torch from the railway station to Race Course stadium in association with the Madurai city police escort.

Entries for the meet would be received till January 29 and one day prior to the event, classification of athletes would be done. Madurai Collector would inaugurate the sports meet and Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan will flag off the events, she said.

S. Krishnamoorthi, president, Paralympic Committee of Tamil Nadu, said that more than anything else, it was the therapeutic value, which events like this provide which even medicines could not do.
