In the wake of report about the death of LTTE leader Prabakaran

TIRUCHI: Security has been tightened in the city with the deployment of para military personnel at vantage places as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents in the wake of the report about the death of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in Sri Lanka.

One company of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel arrived here by flight in the early hours of Tuesday from Hyderabad to assist the city police in maintaining law and order.

Upon arrival here, the CRPF personnel were mobilised at the Police Control Room and later split into teams and deployed at key places in the city such as railway junction, Central and Chathiram bus stands, Gandhi Market arch, Main Guard gate, Puthur Four Road junction and in front of Central Government offices.

One team of the CRPF was deployed at the Kottapattu refugee camp here where over 400 Sri Lankan Tamil families have been residing for several years. One more team has been kept as standby at the control room to act in case of any emergency, a senior official said.

Sources said one company of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) from Arakkonam also arrived in the city on Tuesday.

The CRPF and CISF personnel would be utilised in turns and deployed at important areas along with the city police, the official said.

Ever since the news of Prabhakaran’s death was reported, security was stepped up with the city police being positioned in vantage places.

Security was also provided to the Sri Lankan Airlines office here on Monday to prevent any attack on its premises.
