The renovated park to be opened in the last week of February

CHENNAI: A host of facilities, including fountains, lotus pond, gallery, children’s play area, walkways and landscaped lawns, are being created at Panagal Park in T.Nagar. The Chennai Corporation is renovating the park at a cost of about Rs.1.3 crore.

Inspecting the progress of the work on Monday, Mayor M.Subramanian said “the renovated park will be opened for public in the last week of February. The park, located amid one of the busiest shopping areas in the city, is expect to attract more people on completion of the project.

The civic body would also be taking measures to manage the large number of visitors expected to visit the park, he said.

The work on the three entry points of the park, which is spread over eight acres, would be completed shortly. The renovation would make the park’s lush greenery more visible, the Mayor said.

The children’s play area and public convenience are being constructed at a cost of Rs.11.82 lakh, the three entry points are being beautified at a cost of Rs.22.81 lakh, the expenditure on lotus pond and sitting gallery is Rs.28.81 lakh, walkways are being constructed at a cost of Rs.43.70 lakh and work on landscaped lawn are being done at a cost of Rs.24.18 lakh.

“The Chennai Corporation will try to construct more parks on OSR (open space reservation) lands and other vacant lands available,” Mr.Subramanian said.

The beautification of the Natesan Park, also in T.Nagar, would be completed in the last week of March, he said.
