CHENNAI: Padma awardees see the honour as recognition for their vocation.

Prathap Reddy, who was nominated for Padma Vibhushan, said: “I am so pleased that this award is a recognition for all the clinicians who have managed to put Indian healthcare on the world map. It makes me all the more committed to bringing excellence in healthcare. We are also now focussing on making quality healthcare available to all with our slogan ‘Touch a billion lives.’”

Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman believes the award could be a trendsetter for future generations of percussionists.

He said, “This is the first time the mridhangam has been selected for the most prestigious award and I am really fortunate to be the first recipient. For all my service to the art of mridhangam, spanning over 60 years, I consider this award a signal honour to me and my musical career. It will also be a trendsetter for the present and future generations of percussionists who can strive and achieve such honours by their total dedication and sincerity.”

Ilayaraja, who is in the Padma Bhushan list, was mobbed by fans. He said: “When I came out of the recording studio, the entire street was clogged with people. I am pleased. What is there to say? Silence is my message.”

Educationist Mrs. Y.G.Parthasarathy was happy to hear the news of her selection for the Padma Shri.

She said: “I am very happy that education has been recognised with this award. It is the liberating kind of education that Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan group of schools has been inculcating, with the right mix of art, education and culture, that has been recognised. I have to specially thank my parents and husband who had stood by me, and I share this with the staff of the schools and the students.”
