MADURAI: Puthiya Tamizhagam president K. Krishnasamy on Sunday demanded a judicial probe into the death of a 60-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly beaten up by the police last week at Koomapatti village in Virudhunagar district.

After consoling the relatives of the deceased at the Government Rajaji Hospital here, Mr. Krishnasamy said they would not receive the body until a case was registered against the police officers concerned.

Stating that his party did not have faith in a Revenue Divisional Officer inquiry, Dr. Krishnasamy alleged that officials were trying to cover up the entire episode by registering a case under Section 176 (inquiry by an executive magistrate into cause of death in police custody) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"The deceased was assaulted with a gun and a specific complaint has been lodged against police officers. But the officials are trying to subvert the issue. I have sent a fax message to Chief Minister on Saturday seeking an enquiry into the incident," he told journalists.
