PDS rice seized at Tuticorin port

TUTICORIN: As many as 2,212 tonnes of rice meant for public distribution system was seized here on Saturday by Customs officials. The seized property, valued at Rs.3.89 crore, was found in 44,240 bags. A private exporting company here had filled two shipping bills for the export of rice to Maldives.

Investigation revealed that the consignee was the State Trading Organisation, Maldives. During the course of loading the rice bags in the vessel M.V. Bonthi II at Tuticorin Port, the Customs officers had a suspicion that the rice might have been meant for public distribution system.

Thereafter, the matter was taken up with State Civil Supplies authorities who drew samples of the consignment from the loaded vessel and also from lorries, C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, told a press conference here on Monday.
