CHENNAI: The overbridge at Ellis Nagar in Madurai city will be ready by August, Highways Minister Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan told the Assembly on Thursday.

Answering Communist Party of India (Marxist) member N. Nanmaran’s query, the Minister said the bridge, constructed jointly by the Highways and Railways, would have four lanes. Work on the two-lane portion of the bridge from Arasaradi to Kattabomman statue would be completed before the month-end. The other portion — Periyar bus terminus to Ellis Nagar — would be over by August-end.

When Mr. Nanmaran wanted the bridge to be declared open by Independence Day, Mr. Saminathan assured him that steps would be taken to expedite the work.

Noticing the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the CPI (M) member requested him to inaugurate the overbridge.
