SALEM: About 37,000 children in Salem and Namakkal districts were not administered polio drops as rumours marred the first round of pulse polio immunisation campaign in the two districts.

According to official sources, the health workers were able to cover about 3.31 lakh children during the campaign held on December 21 in Salem district as against the target of 3.6 lakh children in the district.

In Salem city, the coverage was 75,144 children as against the target of 86,000.

People did not bring in the children after rumours spread in the district on Sunday afternoon.

The Health Department directed its workers to identify the children left out in the district and immunise them against polio.

No problems

On Monday, workers had provided polio drops to about 4,200 left-out children, Deputy Director of Health J. Nirmalson said. Officials said that the administration of polio drops would not cause any problems to the children.

In Namakkal district, the Health Department managed to administer polio drops to about 1.40 lakh children. Over 7,000 children in the district could not be covered due to rumours.

Deputy Director of Health C. Sekar said that the health workers were asked to identify the children who were not administered polio drops during the campaign.
