Over 2,000 camps set up for second phase of pulse polio campaign

SALEM: About 3.6 lakh children aged below five in the district will be immunised against polio during second round of Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign scheduled to be held on February 11.

The district administration has established more than 2,100 camps to administer polio drops to the children. Of which, 1,906 camps have been set up in the rural areas, 26 in Attur Municipality and 18 each in Mettur and Edapadi municipalities, a Collectorate release said.

In Salem city, the Corporation has set up 155 camps to immunise over 85,000 children against polio.

Steps are being taken to administer polio drops for three days from February 11 in New Integrated Bus Stand, Old Bus Stand and Railway Junction, Corporation health officials said.

The camps have been established in non-meal centres, schools, all government hospitals, primary health centres and sub-centres and bus stands in the district. Over 9,700 volunteers from public health, education, social welfare, revenue and other government departments and several non-governmental organisations will be involved in the campaign.

Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Indian Medical Association and other voluntary organisations in the district will extend their support to conduct the camps.

Collector N. Mathivanan requested the people to bring all the children aged below five to the nearby camp to immunise them against polio. People should cooperate with the district administration in making Salem district polio-free, he said.

In Namakkal

In Namakkal district, about 1.43 lakh children will be administered polio drops in 1,119 camps established for the campaign. Of them, 1,039 camps have been set up in rural areas and 80 in urban.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to immunise the tribal children in Kolli Hills and Bodha Hills. A total of 26 camps have been set up in the villages in the two hills, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said.
