58 houses were fully damaged and another 46 partially damaged

More than 100 huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the coastal village of Narambai on Wednesday morning.

A total of 58 houses were fully damaged and another 46 partially damaged, an official in the Revenue Department said.

Shortly after visiting the village, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam told The Hindu that the destroyed houses were temporary shelters allotted to tsunami-affected persons.

The Revenue Department had been asked to prepare a report, he said, adding that the government would consider the fishermen's demand for providing proper house. Minister for Social Welfare M. Kandasamy was present at the site.
