MADURAI: Sound effect is often lost in translation; yet translation is a fast growing industry, poet and translator Lakshmi Kannan has said.
She was addressing students and faculty members of American College as part of a ‘Meet the author’ programme organised by Study Centre for Indian Literature in English and Translation (SCILET) here on Wednesday.
Excellent appeal
Bringing out differences in translation in print and electronic media, Ms. Kannan, also a short story writer, said that print media was more conservative but translation had an excellent appeal in it.
Highlighting the flip side of translation, she said that translators would not be able to retain the slang and liveliness of the original.
She read out passages from her poetry collections and short stories and explained why she had chosen the symbols, motifs and images and abundant use of water and parrot assymbols .
Earlier, Paul Love, director of SCILET, welcomed the gathering. Ms. Kannan is a resource person at a three-day creative workshop at Kodaikanal for English students of the college, which concluded on Saturday.
