Old-age pension scheme launched

Those above 65 years and living below poverty line will be covered

SALEM: Collector N. Mathivanan has launched the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme in the district on Monday.

He distributed old age pension to 448 beneficiaries under the scheme. A Collectorate release said that the Union Government renamed the National Old Age Pension Scheme as Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension scheme and expanded its scope. All the senior citizens above 65 years of age and living below the poverty line would be covered under the scheme. Senior officials were present

In Namakkal district, District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj inaugurated the scheme and distributed old age pension to 1,649 beneficiaries.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the district administration was providing financial assistance to over 40,000 farmers, disabled persons, deserted women and widows. Elected representatives and senior officials were present.
