Official reviews rural development works

VELLORE: The Principal Secretary, Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Government of Tamil Nadu, Ashok Vardhan Shetty, reviewed the progress of rural development works in Vellore district along with Collector C. Rajendran, Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency N. Aruljothi Arasan and other officials here on Saturday.

He particularly reviewed the works connected with Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Mr. Shetty later visited the sites of implementation of projects under Vazhndhu Kattuvom scheme in Idayansathu village panchayat in Kaniyambadi panchayat union. He learnt from the stakeholders in the village, especially members of Poverty Eradication Society, the progress of the projects. Members of Idayansathu Agarbathi Producers’ Federation told him that they were earning higher income following their move to tie up with a popular agarbathi-manufacturing company in Mysore. The federation was formed with a loan of Rs.9.50 lakh (including a 50 per cent subsidy) by 100 members of the local women’s self-help groups. The members told Mr. Shetty that 71 members of weaker sections, 54 differently-abled persons and 52 youth have received vocational training and obtained industrial loans out of the fund of Rs.25.5 lakhs received by the Poverty Eradication Society of the Idayansathu village panchayat.

G. Kumaran, Project Manager, Vazhndhu Kattuvom Thittam, Chidambarathanu, Project Officer, Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation, Vellore Project Unit, Venkatachalam, Personal Assistant (Panchayats) to the Collector and Ilangovan, Assistant Director of Village Panchayats, were present during the visit of Mr. Shetty.
