Notice on plea against Bar Council Chairman

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday admitted and ordered notice on a petition seeking a writ of quo warranto direction against R.K. Chandramohan to explain under what authority he held the office of the Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

The petition was filed by Elephant G. Rajendran, an advocate. It relates to a reported remark by Justice R. Regupathi in the open court on June 29, while hearing an anticipatory bail application of a doctor and his medico son, who were wanted by the CBI in a case relating to alleged manipulation of the answer sheet of the student in the MBBS course.

Earlier, the court had directed the Registry to submit a letter written by the judge to the Chief Justice of the High Court.

When the matter came up, the Bench, comprising Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and R. Banumathi, said that it had the benefit of going through the letter. It was satisfied that a prima facie case had been made out for admission. The notice was returnable in four weeks.
