Normal life disrupted in southern districts

MADURAI: Three persons were killed and one washed away in the overnight torrential rain that disrupted normal life in southern districts. Water level in all dams in the region was steadily going up and rivers in Theni district were in spate.

Several houses were damaged in Sivagiri and Sankarankoil taluks (Tirunelveli district), Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam and Ottaipidaram (Tuticorin district), Sivakasi (Virudhunagar district), Gudalur (Theni district), Ramanathapuram, Tiruvadanai, Kadaladi, Paramakudi (Ramanathapuram district) and Madurai. Thirty country boats, fitted with engine, too were reportedly damaged in and around Valinokkam.

Worst affected was Theni district, where the Collector, P. Muthuveeran has declared holiday for all the schools on Monday. Normal life was paralysed in the district. Fire service personnel were deployed to rescue 35 devotees stranded at a temple along the Periyar river near Palanichettipatti following flash floods. Several houses were inundated in Uppukottai. Road connectivity was snapped to Kuttikaradu near Vardahamanadhi dam that recorded 237 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

A two-wheeler rider was washed away in Mullai Periyar river near C. Pudupatti in Cumbum Valley. An aged woman was killed in Sivakasi following a wall collapse. In two different incidents, a man and a woman were electrocuted to death after they came in contact with live wires in Ramanathapuram district.

Tourists were prevented from going near the falls at Courtallam in Tirunelveli district as water was gushing out dangerously in all falls. Though Sivagiri (Tirunelveli district) recorded the highest rainfall of the region with 237 mm, rain has almost stopped in Tirunelveli city.

Water level in the Periyar dam shot up by 7.20 feet till 6 p.m. on Sunday since Saturday morning. The level in Vaigai dam, which was receiving 24,656 cusecs, rose by around four feet. Varadhamanadhi registered 227 mm of rainfall, followed by Kudiraiyaru dam 195, Gudalur 194, Tekkadi 190, Parappalar 156, Kodaikannal Observatory 154, Kodaikanal Boat Club 143, Rajapalayam 138.20, Uthamapalayam 137, Marudhanadi 122, Shanmuganadi120, Peranai 104.5 and Periyar dam 102.10 mm.
