Nine arrested for stoning police

TIRUCHI: Nine persons have been arrested for causing damages to roof tiles of the Thottiyam police station and causing simple injury to few police personnel by hurling stones at them during the temple festival of Madurakaliyamman in Thottiyam on Saturday evening.

A wordy duel broke out between two groups even while the small and big palanquins, carrying deities, were being taken out in a procession, the police said.

Tension prevailed



Even as the police tried to intervene and bring about a compromise, a group allegedly hurled stones causing injury to some police personnel.

The group also allegedly damaged some old tiles outside the station besides damaging a windshield of a government bus sparking tension in the town.

The Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha, and the Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi Rural, A. Kaliyamoorthy, visited the spot and conducted enquiries.

A case has been registered in this connection at the Thottiyam police station.
