Delivers first Scooty Pep Factor Winner Talk

CHENNAI: “Consider greatness,” tennis ace Vijay Amritraj told students at Stella Maris College here on Monday. Delivering the first Scooty Pep Factor Winner Talk, he urged them to never settle for merely the good when the great was within reach.

Mr. Amritraj charmed, advised and held an audience of several hundred young women in thrall for well over an hour, recalling anecdotes from his career, urging them to strive for excellence and to never ever settle for less.

While parents might be concerned that changes were happening too fast, students need to realise that they have the ability to shape India, he said. “Use this ability. Make sure you are part of something special when you grow up,” he added.

His capacity to volley seems undiminished, judging from the élan with which he took questions raised by the students. “You would make a good co-commentator,” he said to one of them, agreeing with the point made that an overdose of technology in professional sport tended to take away the human element of interaction and individuality.

About the low numbers of women in professional sports, he said that society was to blame in many ways, though things were changing for the better now.

S. Srinivas, general manager, TVS Motor Company, said similar talks by winners from different fields to motivate young people would be organised at other venues as well.

The session was the first ‘Talk Session’ with inspiring Indian leaders, organised jointly by TVS Motor Company and Chennai Open 2008 organisers IMG. More would be held across the country, according to a press release.
