Staff Reporter

Chennai: An awareness rally on source segregation of waste was organised by Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF), the firm in-charge of garbage clearance in three zones in the city, on Friday.

Colourful posters on segregation of waste were fixed to 25 NMF vehicles and two compactor trucks went on a procession through a few residential localities in Adyar. About 250 employees clad in the green uniforms carried placards bearing slogans on source segregation.

S. Pattabhiraman, NMF vice president, said Valmiki Nagar in Thiruvanmiyur is one of the model localities where residents have taken up source segregation. Recyclable waste such as glass, plastic, metal and paper are sorted and given to waste collectors. Such material with resale value is collected at the garbage transfer stations and sold to scrap dealers.

Mr. Pattabhiraman said composting of green waste would be taken up after identifying adequate space for the process. NMF hopes to take the source segregation concept in phases to more residential localities in Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones.
