Need to promote awareness among people on nutrition stressed

SALEM: The five-day training programme organised for the project officers of the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme stressed the urgent need to promote awareness among people on nutrition.

The programme, jointly conducted by the Food and Nutrition Board, Government of India and the Department of Food Sciences of Periyar University, also explained the importance of monitoring the growth of children particularly those living in the rural areas, and the need for a coordinate effort to address the malnutrition problem.

Speakers at the programme wanted the health officials to ensure that all the children in the State had access to nutritious food.

The project officers also discussed the importance of nutrition in different stages of life especially in infants, pre-school children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. The programme focussed on prevention of malnutrition, breastfeeding and its importance, complimentary feeding, growth monitoring, low birth weight consequences and its prevention, role of natural antioxidants, nutrition to elderly, nutrition education methods, nutrition counselling techniques, sanitation and personal hygiene.

The preparation of preserved products, high energy and protein rich food items and iron rich food were demonstrated.University Vic-Chancellor M. Thangaraju distributed certificates to the participants from different parts of the State.
