THANJAVUR: A model depicting the five types of land, Kurinji, Mullai, Marudham, Neidhal and Paalai, can be created in the Tamil University campus, according to Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam.

Participating in the wildlife week celebrations organised by the forest department at the university, he said a sum of Rs.25 lakh could be spent for that purpose. The amount could be collected as donations from voluntary organisations.

The Minister, Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar, Tamil University Vice-Chancellor C. Subramaniam and Registrar G. Bhaskaran planted saplings in the campus.

Mr. Vijayaraj Kumar said planting of trees was for long-term benefits and whoever did it were selfless individuals, as they did it for the benefit of the future generation.

Dr. Subramaniam said the tiger population in India was coming down. In 2002, there were 3,700 tigers and now their number had come down to 1,500.
